Godalming United FC originally formed as Farncombe FC in 2005 as the men's team at Farncombe Youth FC.
The original plan was to enter the Guildford & Woking Alliance in Division Four, but having met the league committee it was agreed that the club would be more than capable of competing in Division Three.
So in early September Farncombe FC entertained Burpham Reserves at Meades Park in front of around 100 spectators.
It was a spectacular game, ending 4-3. The line-up that day was Carter; Guest, Darwen, Galatin, Gould; Batty, Simmonds, Talbot; Shepherd, Hunt, Grainger. Sean Hunt scored Farncombe's first ever goal.
As far as first season's go it had some excellent moments - two fantastic home fixtures with Abbey Rangers in both league and cup, our first foray into the Surrey Cup and eventual promotion - finishing 4th.
At the end of the season the decision was taken to move away from Farncombe Youth FC and attempt to run the club independently.
The name was changed to Godalming United FC, the new ground was Tannery Lane, Bramley and a reserve team was added.
It was an even more successful season than the first one - the first team finished runners up in Division Two, got the Quarter Finals of the League Cup and last 32 of the Surrey Cup. The reserves competed admirably in their first ever season and finished mid-table.
GUFC's first season in Division One started slowly - the pre-season was marred by the injury to our young goalkeeper Dan Brennan, players departing and pre-season training never kicking off. The decision was made to cut the reserve team and concentrate on making sure the first team was competitive.
The first game was a great result, a 3-2 win - but with no regular goalkeeper and players being dragged in from all over the place it did not look promising.
Results were mixed for the first month, as were the line-ups, but eventually new players were signed that would go on to make an impact throughout. Ian Copp signed from Guildford City, Ben Mason joined, Matty Anton returned, Scott and Aaron Acton re-signed, a new goalkeeper in Wayne Chapman, an experienced centre-half in Chris Brennan and Lewis Prosser was again available. For the two/three months that the team was stable the results improved dramatically.
However the club was soon unsettled again when chairman/manager Darwen approached local Intermediate side Godalming & Farncombe FC with view to a potential merge for the following season. Talks went well and an initial agreement was in place. However, with G&F struggling at the foot of their league, relegation looming and no manager Darwen agreed to manage their first team until the end of 08/09 in the hope of keeping them up - this would have meant Intermediate Premier football for the newly merged club.
Sadly this led to GUFC taking a back-seat, players being borrowed to bolster the G&F ranks and GUFC's season fizzled out - however they did finish third, but many points off a promotion winning 2nd place. G&F were also relegated and the merger was called off as GUFC no longer felt it was in their best interests.
Moving forwards to 09/10 - GUFC are fully back on track, the 12 year plan to reach the FA Cup Qualifying Rounds is still in place and everyone around the club is excited about the future.
